United Nations Pilgrimage
for Youth
What is the United Nations
Pilgrimage for Youth Program?
This program selects high school students from all over world and shows them
the United Nations in action. The tour of the United Nations building includes
behind-the-scenes briefings conducted by specialized agencies and departments.
In addition to five days in New York that include the tour of the UN and visits
to other significant sites in that city, the itinerary generally includes tours
of Washington, DC; the Gettysburg battlefield; Niagara Falls; Ottawa, Ontario;
and Boston. The United Nations Pilgrimage lasts two weeks during the months
of June or July.
How is the Selection
Made?
The selecting committee examines applications for scholarship, leadership, character,
extracurricular activities, community involvement, and general fitness to participate.
Qualified students will be given study materials and a written test about the
United Nations and required to write an essay or participate in a speech contest.
Who is Eligible?
Students must be 16 or 17 years of age at the time of participation with at
least one year of high school remaining. The student must have a medical examination
to determine physical fitness, showing the student to be free from the need
for special medication, ability to do considerable walking, and stamina to take
part in the tour. The student's parents must sign a statement giving permission
to participate and promise to pay for return travel in the event that illness,
accident or misbehavior prevent the student from traveling home with the tour.
Important Dates to Remember
January 15 - 1/2 of the Tour Fee, per delegate, which is non-refundable.
April 1 - balance of Tour Fees as well as the completed delegates registration
forms are due to Pilgrimage Office.
Jurisdictional Chairmen will probably impose an earlier deadline.
